A serious crash that caused a large diesel fuel spill prompted the closure of an intersection in Cheltenham Township Wednesday afternoon.
Around 1:30 p.m., Cheltenham Township police said the intersection of Church Road and Limekiln Pike in the Glenside section of the township would be closed for an extended period due to the spill.
At 3:50 p.m., officials said Church Road had reopened in both directions at Limekiln. Limekiln Pike remained closed between Church Road and Oak Road.
Cheltenham Township first responders, public works crews, county and state personnel, and hazardous materials crews were working to clear the intersection.

Officials said fuel did spill into the stormwater system through storm drains, and booms were being placed throughout the creek to control the spread of fuel.
Residents should expect to smell diesel fuel in the area as crews continue cleanup and monitoring efforts, officials said. They added that residents do not need to report fuel odors associated with the spill.
Drivers were asked to avoid the area.
